March 2, 2022. Kerouac’s friend, Sammy Sampas (Sebastian G. Sampatacacus), died on this date in 1944.  He was killed by wounds received during the Battle of Anzio, where he served as an army medic.

Sammy and Jack had a very close friendship, and Jack eventually married Sammy’s sister Stella.
A March 1943 letter from “Jack Kerouac: Selected Letters 1940-1956” –

Sebastian!
You magnificent bastard! I was just thinking about you, and all of a sudden, I feel
very Sebastianish,
very Bohemian!
very Baroque!
very GAY! (TURN!)
I was thinking, in a flash of glory, about all the things we’ve done!!!–and all the others we’re going to do!
AFTER THE WAR, WE MUST GO TO FRANCE AND SEE THAT THE REVOLUTION GOES WELL! AND GERMANY TOO! AND ITALY TOO! AND RUSSIA!
For 1. Vodka
2. Love
3. Glory.

Day 25, January 25

A note, under a rock in the snow, on the large monument.  I opened it up and photographed it on the smaller grave stone.  I replaced it in its original position.

Jack
You may have been
swallowed by time but
Your life lives on
in many.  I hope you’ve
found Peace, some
semblence of solitude
atop a mountain that
you’d never consider
having to come down
from.  You Suffered and
lived beautifully and all
of the angels and humanity
are better off for it.
You’ve earned Your rest
Bhodisatveah of the
Dharma Buns, now rest.
Your words are imortal,
like You.

See you soon,
Griffin
